Three protection protocols

There are three tools that work together to protect your email infrastructure: SPF (Sender Policy Framework), DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail), and DMARC (Domain-based MessageAuthenticating, Reporting and Conformance).

Together, they check, filter and report fraudulent emails used for phishing and email spoofing. They validate the ‘hidden’ information of an email and determine what happens when it doesn’t pass authentication.

Email protection protocols

Emails sent from and to your organisation contain specific domain and mail server information. Without the right tools, you cannot discover the emails that do not match this information.

The SPF and DKIM standards assess your email traffic. SPF checks whether the mail server is whitelisted to send emails from your organisation, and DKIM adds a signature to the email to make sure the email is not altered when it goes from sender to receiver.

Based on the results of these steps and the policies you have set up, DMARC will automatically process emails by accepting them, or rejecting / flagging them when they do not pass the tests. This is the remediation phase of the process. Extensive reporting will help you in identifying who is behind the email attacks and will also identify any misconfiguration of your email infrastructure. Additionally, everyone who uses your email address without permission will be exposed.
